Keepin’ BUSY in early 2012

02.22.12

BattlestationWe wanted to take some time to update some of our lovely fans about our progress as we write and record some tasty new tracks! Over the past few weeks we’ve been piecing together a lot of ideas into what will become our second album. We are taking time to refine themes and moods that we want to convey but a lot of other interesting and surprising things are popping into our heads with every recording session.

SynthingIn a time when the future is uncertain, with warfare, police brutality and the threat of the economy tanking for good, we haven’t allowed those topics to dissuade us from writing, but quite the opposite, we’re using their influence to create a dark undertone to our new songs. The emotions associated with these topics are definitely universal, so it’s interesting to take real feelings of fear and uncertainty and tell a story that seemingly has nothing to do with events in the real world. This, paired with the fun and high-energy electropop that friends and fans have come to expect, reaches for something familiar with past recordings but also something fresh and refined.

Trey and RachAnother change we are making during this process is that we are incorporating a lot of talent from friends and sweet local bands. We are but two and it is definitely helpful and encouraging to know so many other musicians who are willing to collaborate and make great music with us. We are trying to have as much fun with this as possible and friends make everything more fun. Expect to see a list of credits and thanks in our album jacket and website when this is complete.

If you are excited to hear our new songs be sure to check out our website or Facebook regularly as we may post updates, previews or other relevant information about this record. We are so lucky to have the kind of support we are getting from a lot of you and we deeply appreciate it. Thanks for reading and stay tuned!

Swimming With Dolphins

01.25.11

I hit the play button on an embedded music player on their Myspace page and I hear some pickup notes that seem to me a promise that the following music will be an adventure. The crash cymbal rings out and instantly I am overcome with a sense of nostalgia and wonder as I am eagerly listening to the busy drums and the waves of rhythmic synth. This leads me into a straight and simple, yet beautiful female vocalist singing a somber melody while the beats carry on in an intricate language. The drums pull back, as a harmony joins in and there are bells foreshadowing behind it. The song plunges back into the chorus when lead singer Austin Tofte’s vocal part take the lead.

This song, called Silhouettes, never gets old for me. I could listen to it for days.

Nick and I first stumbled onto Swimming With Dolphins back in our early days as a band. We instantly became captivated by the technical rhythms, synth lines and the compelling vocal style. We looked through some of pictures and saw vintage beach themed photos and shots of the band members playing synthesizers. More importantly, what we saw was another two-man band making electronic music just like us. We saw that it was possible and it motivated us to press forward.

When we lived in Chicago, we went to see Swimming With Dolphins when they came through with The Ready Set. We stood in the crowd amongst younger folks and listened as Austin played on his own. He told us that his former band mate Adam Young couldn’t make it that night. We were astonished to hear that his live set was incredibly close to his recordings. We couldn’t believe that he pulled it off by himself. Again we were encouraged and inspired. We approached him after the show and talked to him for a bit about his music. He was modest and incredibly nice. We walked away from that show with a sense of deep respect and appreciation for Austin and his music.

The other day Nick pulled up a new YouTube video of a live Swimming With Dolphins set and a short written interview. Below is the video.

It’s great to see how Austin has progressed with his act. His new songs are killer. I can’t wait to hear his next album. I can already tell I like the direction. He also has a live drummer. Nick and I have noticed that this makes a huge difference with electronic music played live. Sometimes recorded drum tracks lose some beef when they are played in a large room. We’ve seen other electronic bands like Playradioplay! and Ming and Ping use a live kit and the result is a bump that you can feel in your chest.

Swimming With Dolphins is coming to Portland on March 23rd at Backspace. If you are in the area and you like what you’ve heard, be sure to make it out. We will be there for sure. If you are not in Portland, check out their Myspace for tour info.

Austin, we love what you are doing and support you! If you ever want to play a show, give us a shout!

Cinnamon Chasers = Rad UK Electro

09.30.10

Cinnamon Chasers

I woke up today knowing that at some point today I needed to make a post but I still hadn’t figured out what to write about. I opened up my laptop and clicked my faithful Stumble button in hopes that I might find some inspiration. This video was the first thing that popped up.

This video was really inspiring for me which I LOVE. I was so stoked about the music that I imediately went to the bands website and read this:
“…Is reality just an illusion? An artist builds a machine to find out and breaks through the fabric of space and time. Then he runs like hell…”
How thought provoking. Cinnamon Chasers is a band from London that sound authentically 80′s. Their site describes them as an “alternative electro/ indietronica act” who is experimenting with philosophy which is proven in this music video.

The video depicts a couple who seem to be playfully infatuated with each other in a sexually charged, care-free relationship. During a spontaneous road trip they are confronted with an important decision after receiving the check at a diner. From that point the video plays through three different outcomes all which end up… well watch the video and see.

The music is incredible and it sets the tone for this sort of bittersweet situation. Its really awesome to see footage of a connection between the guy and the girl matched with their rebellious young lifestyle. The song compliments these sort of surreal moments and casts a shadow over the excitement of new love, implying that no one is perfect. Might I add that near the end of the video the couple visits Oregon’s famous Cannon Beach. Haystack Rock is clearly seen in the background as they run in the sand on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Upon further investigation I found that this song is not unlike the rest of their music and I would encourage one to visit their site and preview some other songs on their new EP. If it suits you, their album is rather cheap and can be purchased on iTunes, emusic, and amazon.com.

Thank you, Cinnamon Chasers, for your contribution to electronic music. You have our attention.

A critical look at a common question.

09.11.10

What tickles your fancy?
Today someone asked me what kind of music I liked. It doesn’t sound like something worth posting in a blog about… but it turned out to be… and I’ll tell you why.

One of the main points of conversation that I default to when meeting someone new or getting to know someone better is to ask them what kind of music they are into. Now I didn’t realize until today, when I thought about it, that the reason I do this is not because I really want the information, but its actually because I am trying to establish a connection with someone through something I might have in common with them. When I find someone who starts spouting off bands that I know and like, I get super excited about the idea of carrying on a conversation with them about something very familiar to me. It becomes way easier for me to really bond with the person.

So, people have asked me this question before and I usually say something like “well I pretty much like anything,” or some other basic answer that implies that my musical interests are so broad that it’s difficult to narrow it down. I don’t do it on purpose. I’m usually just caught off guard and so I settle on a short answer to keep form boring the other person, or simply that I would have a hard time coming up with enough examples to represent all that I appreciate in a world of lovely noise.

Today, however, a friend of mine asked me what music I liked. I replied this time with a “well, that depends.” It got really weird from there. I asked her if she meant out of music that I really respect and appreciate, or music that I usually listen to on a regular basis (how could anyone even think of it that way?). I don’t know why I complicated it like this since my normal aim is not to be complicated with my answer. Needless to say, it sort of created a confusing picture for her of what interests me musically. After we talked about it for a little bit, I named off some bands that she hadn’t heard of and it felt kind of awkward and unresolved. It came to my realization that they way I express myself in this situation is completely and ridiculously off-putting. Even when I go my normal route with a simple answer, it doesn’t really allow people access to one of the most important parts of me.

The truth is that people identify themselves with music. If someone wants to know what suits you, it seems to me that it’s really an attempt for them to look into you and find something that they can relate themselves to. Music is so powerful that just talking about it connects people. I think that we are all aware of this and I think it leads people (myself included) to try and impress everyone with their selections. I’m willing to bet that every single person has got their “guilty pleasures’ of music that they really like but are too ashamed to say it. I say we give it up. If you like something you should admit it and be prepared to show people why its awesome. For all you know there are other people that really like it too but are also too afraid to say. Or perhaps they’ve made up their minds about music that they would really like if only they took some time to actually listen to it. That kind of situation has potential to turn into a really valuable relationship.

From now on I’m going to be completely honest with what music I like. If that means admitting that Katy Perry makes me squeal, or that Coldplay deserves every ounce of the fame that they have, it’s a small price to pay for finding someone that doesn’t snicker at me when I say so.

After my short experience today I feel compelled to organize my thoughts and to reexplain what music I like and try to answer people in a more direct and intelligible way. Here goes:

I like music with a good beat and bass that you can feel in your chest. I like a song that is catchy and refuses to let me forget it. I love when no matter what the words are, you sing them when you hear it because it just feels right. I like music that sounds big, when it sounds like it’s playing from the tops of mountains. I like music that makes me move my feet without me knowing. I like music that is complex and that shows me something I’ve never noticed even after the thousandth time listening to it. I also like music that is simple and is easy to connect with. I like music with words that compel me to be more than just a person, but to be a hero, or a lover. I like when music flows up and down and in and out of reality and takes me with it. I like music that inspires people who then write more music that inspires people. I like music that can be played in any language but can still evoke feelings in everyone. I like music that makes you happy and sad at the same time. I like music that is timeless and speaks to generation after generation, forever. I like music that shapes humanity.

We are alive.

07.12.10

I was looking at our blog and I decided that we are terrible with updates. I love what Nick did with that give-away banner but I’m sick of looking at it. So I’m going to fill in our reader(s?) with the progress Nick and I have made in our few months together here in Portland!

Nick and I have had many practice/beer drinking sessions at his place toying with new musical ideas and discussing the direction we are heading. There are a number of fun little bits and pieces we have been tossing back and forth and we are feeling good about how our sound is developing. We couldn’t be more happy with how our recent change in location seems to be giving us killer inspiration. Look out cause these are going to be SO fun.

In addition to writing new material we’ve also been scoping out possible venues in P-Town. We have made some quick lists of some places to check out before we send out some music and info to try and land some gigs. We hope to have our first show in Portland very very very very very soon. (sooner than that sounds)

One last thing to hint at. Nick and I have been working on recording a fun cover to post on our site for your sweet little ears. Stay tuned in the next week or so to hear one of our favorite songs done AYIG Style!

love,
